Golden syrup dumplings

  • 150g self-raising flour
  • 60g butter, cut into cubes
  • 1 egg
  • 30ml milk
  • 375ml water
  • 45g butter
  • 300g brown sugar
  • 180g golden syrup
  • 1 lemon, juiced


  1. Sift the flour into a bowl and then rub in the butter until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs
  2. Beat the egg with the milk and pour into the flour mixture
  3. Combine to form a dough, then divide and shape into 12 small balls
  4. To make the syrup mix together the water, butter, sugar, golden syrup and lemon juice in a medium size saucepan and bring to the boil
  5. Carefully add the dough balls to the syrup and simmer for 15-20 minutes
  6. Serve warm with syrup, cream or ice cream
  7. Making and shaping the dough is a fabulous job for the kids after the homework is done
  8. Any extra syrup can be used to pour over fresh or poached fruit as a quick winter dessert
